The Phillies MLB Urban Youth Academy provides free, year-round instruction to players in Philadelphia. May 21: Students at Dr. Ethel Allen Elementary School were in for a fun morning as they receive a special delivery of trees for their playground and surrounding area from the Phillies, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW). The event took place thanks to the school’s principal, who wrote about the need for shadier reading and playing areas for his students in a Home Run for Trees contest held last season. Since 2012, The Phillies have partnered with PGW and PHS to plant a tree for each home run hit by a Phillies player during the regular season. To date, over 1,300 trees have been planted in the Delaware Valley. The initiative is part of PHS’s effort to help increase the region’s tree count and promote healthier, greener neighborhoods. A Phillies tradition of more than 19 years continues! On Monday, Dec. 16, more than 200 deserving community members and staff at Bethesda Project's Our Brothers' Place - one of the largest homeless shelters in Philadelphia - were served a holiday dinner by the Phillies family. All the holiday meals were donated and prepared by Phillies front office volunteers, with 25 turkeys provided by GIANT Food Stores. Local police officers and the Phillies teamed up to make sure this holiday is one to remember for children attending the Ford PAL Center in South Philadelphia. Hundreds of toys, many of which were donated by fans during the Phillies Ballgirls Christmas in July Toy Drive, were distributed to the kids by Santa Claus and the Phillie Phanatic, as well as Phillies Alumnus Mickey Morandini, Director of Public Affairs Scott Palmer and the Phillies Ballgirls. On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the spirit of giving was on full display during a "Phillies Holiday Gift Wrapping Party" at St. Anastasia School in Newtown, Pa.1993 National League Champion Mickey Morandini, Phillies Director of Public Affairs Scott Palmer and volunteers from the Phillies front office made a special visit to St. Anastasia School, where they joined students and teachers in wrapping hundreds of gifts to be given to families battling cancer. On Saturday, Nov. 9, it was Love Your Park Fall Service Day, and members of the Phillies family gathered to help rake leaves at David P. Montgomery Field in Roxborough, Pa. The fall cleanup was held to get the area ready for the winter, and took place one year after the field was officially renamed after the Phillies beloved Chairman David Montgomery.
